Cohesive & Strong Communities

Strong and Cohesive Communities is one of the 5 themes for the Buckinghamshire family of Sustainable Community Strategies. You will be able to track progress in Buckinghamshire on this theme here.

What are aiming to achieve by 2026?

Buckinghamshire residents already play a very active part in their communities and report high levels of satisfaction with community wellbeing. The challenge is to sustain and build on this community spirit at a time of great change in population and demographic profile of the county.

We will continue to value and supporting the work of the voluntary and community sector so that it can play an even more prominent role in helping to connect people and building stronger communities in Bucks. This includes social enterprises and the important role businesses can play in promoting social responsibility.

Understanding between different age groups, communities, faiths and cultures will be promoted so that there is a bedrock of mutual respect.  This will be achieved in part through improved provision of activities for young people, local accessible facilities and support to prevent social isolation for older people or those living in rural areas.

Communities will be encouraged to work with partnerships to identify and provide local solutions for local issues.  A benefit of this will be better engagement of people in their communities to prevent anti-social behaviour, which we know affects residents’ satisfaction with their area.  The aim is to involve residents as much as possible in the decisions that affect them, so that the area is shaped and developed in direct correlation to residents’ views.  Parish, town, district and county councillors have an important role to play here in supporting and guiding their local communities.

For communities to get on as well as possible together, there needs to be equality of access to services and opportunities.  In Buckinghamshire, this means tackling disadvantage wherever it occurs.  It means raising up those communities who currently cannot reach their potential.  This involves some specific geographic areas in the county as well as groups of people across the area who are disproportionately disadvantaged compared to the population as a whole.

We aim to:

  • Sustain and grow a thriving voluntary and community sector
  • Increase confidence of communities
  • All communities get on well together
  • Reduce levels of disadvantage

How will we do this?

As the website is developed, we will communicate examples of how Strong and Cohesive Communities is being promoted in Buckinghamshire.
